Annie Laurie's Story
I had an unsucessful marriage in 1958, We were both too young. Only lasted 5 years, but managed to have 3 children. I moved to Key West in 1964 where I met an married a wonderful man. He was in the Navy, and after his discharge in 1968 we moved back to his home state, NJ. We had 2 more kids and raised them in the small town where he had grown up. It amazed me he was friends with kids he had gone to kindergarden with. That's how small the town is.
He became a police officer, eventually becoming Chief. I worked at Dept. of Motor Vehicles during this time. It was great living in a small town and knowing everyone. Unfortunately he had a fatal heart attack at the age of 48 and passed away. My life took a drastic turn. Everything changed. My plans, hopes and dreams were no more.
I was like a fish out of water until one day, not long after he passed, I decided to do something with my life. My children were grown for the most part, and didn't really need me. I weeeent back to school to become a nurse. Something I had wanted to do when I was a teenager.
It was not easy, mot having been to school in so many years. But I worked hard, studing every spare minute. It paid off and I graduated. I specialized ...Expand for more
in geriatrics and found it so rewarding. It was great going to work each day and seeing a smile when you walked into a patient's room. You then knew, you made a difference in someone's life, if only to make their day a little brighter.
I retired about 3 years ago, sold my home to my son, built an apartment onto my daughter's house and moved in. I have helped care for 4 of my grandchildren and watched them grow up. It's been great. I belong to a couple of organizations at my church and am active in them.
I've had the privilege to travel. Going on cruises seeing most of the Carribbean islands. Also went to South American. when I went to Europe, I was awed by all the history there. I especially loved Italy. Was there for 2 weeks and loved every moment. I would go back in a second.
I would say I've had a wonderful life and would not change a thing. Hope all my fellow classmates have had the same.
I have made some changes in my life. I'm now living in Boca Raton Fl. so I have made a circle. Moved down the beginning of Sept. 2012. Loving the weather, sometimes it feel as though I never left. BUT, I do miss my NJ friends, and activites. Hoping I will be able to meet new ones and become active again.
